Day 10 Challenge: I want you to think back to the journey you’ve been on in the last 10 days. I encourage you to read through all your posts to celebrate all that you’ve written, learned and experienced as part of this daily blog challenge.

So here is blog entry number 10. Challenge complete or just starting? As with life there are always questions to be answered and answers that just create more questions. Here are a couple from Natalie to help clarify and solidify the experience.

What you enjoyed most about your experience of taking part in the blog challenge?

Completing it.

Previously I would have been too caught up in things that would have stopped me from starting. All the normal insecurities that life throws at you: why start, who is going to read it, can I complete it, there is something else that needs to be done, you’re not very good at writing. Until these issues and others are recognised and dealt with (sometimes just acknowledging and putting to one side) the power just seems to grow.

Your favorite challenge day and why?

No real favourite day. They all just built on to each other adding clarity and confidence that ‘I can do it’. The is actually the best feeling and best clarity provider. The small steps move you closer to the next place instead of standing still.

The biggest takeaway you’ve had from it?

If I really choose to do something and allow it to occur (get out of my own way) things can be done and completed especially if it is new and have to distinct success points to draw on.

The next step you’re going to take to make your freedom plan a reality?

For me the next steps are defining and implementing a workable schedule that helps me be and feel more productive and maintain family life. This will allow me to find the next step and be an example for my family to do the same. I personally don’t want to jump to far ahead of myself instead allow the little gains and successes (like completing this challenge) to snowball and grow.

Easiest path is momentum – it needs to be maintained and it will grow.

Adventure in an Alternate Location

Day 9 Challenge: How would you like to do what you love where you would love to from your choosing?

Day 9 Challenge: Imagine you are on a long holiday in Portugal (or wherever your dream destination is). There are castles to explore, secret bars to discover, and sunny beaches to laze around on. In today’s post, I want you to write about how you will balance your adventure and work while you are away on this holiday.

How to balance work and play? The conundrum of life. Sun is shining, things to experience and you have a dead line, what to do?

I have had the privilege of working remotely, from where my current role technically exists, for the last 8 years and it has been a blessing. I am more involved in my families lives and do not miss out on really important stuff like first day of school, school plays, sporting games and practices. The experiences that create memories and connections with family and friends.

What I have found over the last eight years is to have clearly defined boundaries so that work does not get neglected – and it is very easy to do. Some days it is hard and remembering the responsibilities that have been agreed upon helps maintain the clarity.

So, how would I balance work and play if I was in another country?

Here is what I have learnt

  1. Accept that not everything can be done at once or needs to be done now. From a work and play perspective.
  2. Know and understand your time zones. Very important for meetings of any type.
  3. Have communication expectations defined and understood. This helps people know that you are not surfing when you need to be in a meeting. Many jokes have been made about this based on my situation. Plus it helps with family who want to go and do something and you can  provide clarity on if it is possible.
  4. prioritize your actions. This will help provide clarity on what needs to be done and when so the fun stuff can be included rather than having to deal with a commute to and from work (don’t miss that).

Ultimately your life revolves around your perspective and it can be as hard, simple, easy or complex as you desire and define.

We just have to choose.

Family Fun Day

Day 8 Challenge: Life is about enjoyment – will it should be. Must be part of life.

[Day 8] Choosing Your Adventure |The Suitcase Entrepreneur

This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 8

Day 8 Challenge: Today is a fun day. So I want you to go out and do something that you’ve wanted to do for a long time. Go out play, enjoy, and come back and write about what you did. Also, write about how you can make such adventures part of your new lifestyle.

Did not really read the challenge until the day was over. Oops. Plus it was rainy and overcast. No excuse there though.

The fun things I did today occurred with my family together and apart. My son had a great time playing video games (he is 14) and I also had some fun doing that.

We all played apart in preparing and cooking dinner – coconut curry with rice. It was very nice.

And finally we played a board game (The Logo Game – for the first time). We learnt that my son and my wife don’t really listen to my instructions about how to play the game. Plus our son is very particular about the answers – not 100% matching the card = WRONG.

It was still good even though not exciting. These types of adventures should be done as normal as opposed to special or for a new life. Make it the current one.

Ideally these times and adventures could be improved if they were in another country – exploring and expanding horizons – though our dog would not be part of that, which would diminish the family feeling.

Enjoy the moment and enjoy the day. Repeat and you will have more active moments and days than regret.

Why Procrastinate When You Can Do It Later

Day 7 Challenge: Choose something and do it over and over – procrastination gone

[Day 7] Beating Procrastination And Overwhelm |The Suitcase Entrepreneur

This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 7

Day 7 Challenge: Pick one imperfect action that you can take every day that will move you closer to the life you have envisioned.

Ahhhh procrastination. The bane of my life yet so comfortable.

Just give me 5 more minutes…..I just need to look at this….boring….I don’t feel up to it….I should clean that….I feel hungry….plus a million other reasons. Then the day appears gone and the best reason is left…I will do it tomorrow.

Who’s to really blame? Or better why did we allow the habit to begin? Maybe the things we keep putting off are not what we really want and as we ignore things, put them off, we go further away from what we really want and must do to get closer to our dreams and goals.

It is our habit and our responibility. We have to own it otherwise it owns us.

My imperfect action will be reading and actually doing any exercise in the book. No exercise  make up one or create a summary page so I can better understand the content and integrate it into my life.

I have lots of books and articles that I need to deal with as my collection is overwhelming as I like collecting information but not using it.

Time to review, learn and cull.

Day 6 Challenge: Find 1 or 2 people who are living the kind of life you want to live, and whose tribe you’d love to be part of. Then write a short post about why you find them inspiring and the one question you would ask them if you met in real life.

Why would you want to model others? They have already done it and demonstrated that it could work for you. You can use it as a short cut to take the next steps in your life.

Why is this quote so used and so important. Personally I believe the world around you is formed by your thoughts and beliefs – both conscious and unconscious. Your external world is a mirror for your internal world. As you change and adapt your internal being the external world will also change and adapt.

So who would I want to model?

Tim Ferriss


Primarily because I would like to be able to explore ideas, learn quicker and be able to break things down to make them easier to understand and therefore implement. Also he seems to be able to do this whilst travelling the world with the confidence that anything is possible for any one.

The Big question

How do you get out of your own way and conquer new challenges?

Sir Richard Branson


Sir Richard seems to be able to demonstrate that you can be yourself and be successful without being an arsehole. I am sure he has his moments as we all do but they don’t seem to cloud who he is. His energy and joy for life seems to be contagous not only drawing people to him but then empowering them to go and do their thing.

Day 5 Challenge: What you will do, when you will do it, and how it will get you closer to your dreams

[Day 5] Setting Yourself Up For Success |The Suitcase Entrepreneur

This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 5

Day 5 Challenge: Create a daily success plan for yourself that takes only 15-20 minutes and schedule a time in the day where you can squeeze it in. Write a blog post about what you will do, when you will do it, and how it will get you closer to your dreams.

Success from what I have read and experienced comes down to consistency on doing things that MUST be done. Not could-should-need-have to MUST. Being consistent and performing regular tasks that you succeed at and take you towards your goals and dreams. Not an instant over-night success.

I know what I need to do and they have not been done. Why? Comfort, unwilling to fail (even if that means succeeding in learning) have not defined what needs to be done and most importantly – deciding and taking the actions that MUST be done.

Reasons that something MUST be done can vary and ultimately I believe they fall into 2 categories: to have future success and to eliminate current discomfort. If neither have reached a point that it becomes unbearable to continue the current discomfort and avoid the future success then your current circumstances will continue.

So what do I feel I must do now?

Creating space both mentally and physically. This will allow new things to occur and flow.

I recently watched a video about yoga and the science behind it – Science of Yoga. During the video one of the presenters said that the purpose of yoga poses is to create space within the body (at all levels) and this allows prana to flow. Prana is the energy that flows to all the systems within the body – nervous, lymphatic, breathing, mental, blood system.

Over time stresses in life can make you feel compressed in many ways and this compression can become over bearing and start to restrict.

To integrate something new into your life – unless there is very urgent and pressing reasons – can sometimes take time and may need to be done in small chunks.The regular completion of these small tasks will build up a success account that can be referenced and drawn upon in times of need.

The Plan

Develop a series of yoga poses and breathing exercises that only take 15 minutes and perform them 3 times a day.

For the yoga poses I am a fan of the 5 Tibetan rights so they must be part of the process.

I also must improve my flexibility and strength in my hips and abs (core strength) for future adventures. A couple of the Tibetan rights already do this.

As for breathing exercises, I started (and stopped) doing what is known as ‘7 rounds of 7’

  • Breathing in – 7 secs
  • Hold the breath – 7 secs
  • Breath out – 7 secs
  • Hold the exhale – 7 secs

This breathing process helps regulate your breath which in turn helps regulate hormones flowing through your body which then directly impact it physically.

When you are stressed do you breathe faster or slower? Are you instantly told by someone else to slow down your breathing? Making the conscious decision to regulate your own breath and integrate this regular action daily may help build internal ‘strength’ so stressful/chaotic issues can be handled better.

Well that is plan any way, so I better get cracking.

Superpowers from Within

Day 4: Personal Superpowers to make your life fly

Day 4 Challenge: Write down what your super powers are and how these superpowers will help you to realize your dream of living the freedom lifestyle.

Everyone has their superpower list that they may or may not be aware of. These are the things that you can do with little to no motivation or inspiration. When a possibility to use them comes along that intrigues, you say ‘Yes, I can do that’ quicker, easier and with little doubt. You have confidence in them and within yourself.

Sometimes though, these superpower may block your need to adapt as they become a comfort zone – nice and warm, no change required here.

Personally thinking about my career and what I do well, I know I am very good at the following:

  • Analysing and researching problems
  • Process creation – especially on a mental level.
  • Creating solutions that resolve the problem so the possibility of it occurring again is very small

I enjoy these tasks as they challenge the mind and current understanding. The mental process creation helps should the same or similar issue recurs as I can resolve the problem quicker – especially as my back ground is support software.

So how these superpowers help with creating a new and improved life style? This is the big  question and one that I have been thinking about recently.

It ultimately is about the reframing of these superpowers to suit the next challenge. By reframing them appropriately, you should be able to carry over the confidence you have and make things a little easier. Having confidence within yourself, at least with your well honed skills, you can overcome the initial  ‘holy crap, how can I do this’ mental burp that can get you stuck and throw a big spanner in the works.

If the reframing does not occur, these superpowers can turn into the proverbial kryptonite, confuse yourself and reduce your personal confidence with the skills that previously helped to define you.

Now, how do I reframe my problem solving skills to solve …. my current problems? Without getting into analysis-paralysis.

A Good Day for Life

What Else Could I fit in?

Life should be filled with a wide range of experiences:

  • lunches at good cafe’s and restaurants
  • movies and concerts (music, plays, opera)
  • Courses to improve me, family and skill set.

Ultimately my perfect day would be a dichotomy of being structured so that I could be as productive as possible – feel more useful that now – and provide myself with enough freedom to make a choice to do ‘something’ spontaneous. You have to allow for that, otherwise, it might get boring.

Ultimately the dog will still need to be walked. Maybe twice because she likes her walks on the beach.

Day 2 Challenge: I want you to write down a reason for why you want to live the freedom lifestyle. Bonus points if you can figure out how to make a positive impact in the world by living this lifestyle.

Another day and another question. A big one – WHY.

Why do we do anything or nothing or sit on the fence waiting endlessly for ….something to make us choose.

Feather, Brick, Truck

Over the last few weeks as it has become clearer that I am not really following my why, my real why. I have looked back and analysed events, actions, inactions. This has led me to believe that life throws us clues to follow, bones to chew, to get us to make the realisation that we need to be able to set our own path.

A path of action that, whilst we may not know 100% where it will lead us or how long it will take, we must follow with determination. Along the way things will occur that will validate our path and our why, even if we only know it unconsciously.

Life will provide feedback. We just have to allow ourselves to be more aware, so that when the truck comes along we can get it for the ride rather than be run over and have to dust ourselves off to figure out where it went ‘wrong’ and what we needed to learn so we can make better. The feathers and bricks provide precursors to the truck.

Me and My Why

For me it is about the experience of what life could offer. The potential of our imagination and dreams once we decide to follow them whole heartedly and unwaveringly. Plus how my family experiences their lives. This improves my life and the experiences on offer.

We each have a unique set of skills, desires, opportunities and any number of other attributes that make us an individual and who we are. Sometimes we know them, accept them and honour them. Most times we don’t and allow outside forces – friends, society, the media, false beliefs, complete strangers – to cloud our being.

This could make us question our life and how we choose our path.How and what we choose then reverberates around us and we become an example to others and their interpretation of their path.

The Path

There are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ paths, only the one we are on and currently following – is the path you are on taking you where you want to go? Did you consciously or unconsciously choose your current path? Your why will help determine that.

If the path and the why match (sometimes more or less) then I hope both . If not, question the path and question the why until they do.

My Current 3 Life Challenges

This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 1

Day 1 Challenge: Take some time to think about your biggest challenges, then list down 2-3 of them and write a few lines about why you think they are holding you back.

Recently things in life has been coming to a point that no longer can be ignored. Life as I expect it or want it is passing me by and it is time to do something.

1. Self-Responsibility

Not taking responsibility for myself and therefore my life has surfaced as my current challenge. For a long time I thought I was responsible but I am not and am indirectly blaming other ‘things’ for  my frustrations and inactions. This lack of real self responsiblity is sapping. And the indirect blame compounds.

Personal responsibility is choice and MUST be made to take control of life.

2. Self-Confidence

Not believing in myself and that I have a voice with something to say that would be listen to and valued. I have plenty of examples of providing important information but ignore it. Not a good choice.

I do say and teach things that are of value. I allow the way ‘I’ interpret how the recipients use it (or not) for their own needs, which reflects back to me on my action/inaction on what I read, view and listen to. This interpretation then feeds the lack of confidence that am not being listened to.

3. Physical and Financial Health

More personal responsibility would have not allowed the issues to materialise.

More personal responsibility will put me into action to clear things up and stop them degrading further

Both stop me from currently experiencing life as I would like because I allow my current self-confidence and personal responsiblity levels to follow through and take action on the thoughts that come to me and any advice that is provided to me.


Maybe nothing will happen from this challenge, maybe everything. I suppose I will find out along the way as I write. Maybe all I needed to do was make the choice and follow through.
